Due to an emergency concerning today’s seminar presenter, Dr. Taha Osman, we would like to announce the cancellation of the seminar on August 28, 2018 at the Natural History Museum that was organised by the Sudanese Knowledge Society.

The Sudanese Knowledge Society wishes you a happy Eid al-Adha and is pleased to invite you to attend our monthly seminar. The seminar will be held immediately after the Eid holiday on Tuesday, August 28, 2018, from 4:00 to 6:00 pm, at the Natural History Museum, University of Khartoum, University Road (next to Sharjah Hall).

We are honored to have Dr. Taha Osman from the University of Nottingham Trent to give us a seminar entitled "Hybrid Approach between Knowledge-Based Method and Machine Learning in Processing Arabic Information." The seminar reviews the researcher's efforts to meet the challenges of research and applications of natural language processing in the Arabic language, and Knowledge-based systems. The seminar is designed for all those interested in the development of intelligent information retrieval systems, opinion analysis, interconnected and open data, and other applications of semantic web technologies.

It will be a great pleasure to welcome you to this seminar as well as very appreciative if you extend this invitation to your friends and those interested in the topic of the seminar.

ABOUT THE SEMINAR

A Hybrid Knowledge-based and Machine Learning Approach for Arabic Information Processing

The advances in the research and development of Arabic Information Retrieval systems is not as remarkable in comparison to European languages, which is reflected in the scarcity of Arabic Natural Language Processing (NLP) resources and tools; this has subsequently contributed to the deficit in the investment in Arabic textual analytics applications such as sentiment analysis, expert (recommender) systems and cybercrime. 

The relatively slow progress in Arabic NLP research can be attributed to the complexity of the Arabic language morphology, variation in word semantics and lexical categories, and the heavy use of discretisation. This talk introduces our efforts in addressing these challenges by adopting a knowledge-based approach that is complemented by Machine Learning (Artificial Intelligence) techniques.

النهج الهجين بين  الطريقة المعتمدة على المعرفة و طريقة تعلم الآلة في معالجة المعلومات العربية

إن التقدم في البحث و التطوير في أنظمة إسترجاع المعلومات في اللغة العربية ليس ملفتا للنظر حين مقارنته باللغات الأوربية الأمر الذي يعكس الندرة في موارد وأدوات  معالجة اللغات الطبيعية للغة العربية، مما أدى بدوره إلى نقص في الإستثمار في تطبيقات معالجة و تحليلات النصوص العربية مثل تحليل الرأي (و المشاعر) و النظم الخبيرة (نظم التوصيات و التفضيلات) و الجرائم السايبرية.

البطء النسبي للتقدم في بحوث معالجة اللغات الطبيعية في العربية يمكن أن يعزى لتعقيد بنيتها الظاهرية و للتباين في معاني الكلمة الواحدة وتصانيفها الإصطلاحية و المعجمية  فضلا عن الإستخدام المفرط للتفكيك. نقدم في حديثنا هذا مجهوداتنا في مخاطبة هذه التحديات بتبني الطريقة المعتمدة على المعرفة التي تكامل بتقنيات تعلم الآلة ( الذكاء الإصطناعي).

ABOUT THE SPEAKER

Taha Osman received his Ph.D. in Distributed Systems’ Fault Tolerance from Nottingham Trent University, where he currently reads Service-Centric and Cloud Computing and Semantic Web Technologies to Level 3 and MSc students. He is also the manager of the Computing and Technology postgraduate courses. Building on a strong research track record in intelligent multi-agent systems, Dr Osman started exploring the utilisation of the semantic web technology in the intelligent composition of Web services. The application of semantic technologies in Dr. Osman's research further expanded to intelligent information retrieval and knowledge management, with particular interests in Arabic Language Processing and sentiment analysis.

عن المحاضر

حصل طه عثمان على درجة الدكتوراة من جامعة نوتنقهام ترنت في "النظم الموزعة ذات سماحية الأخطاء" و هو حاليا محاضر و معيد  محاضر رئيسي في محورية الخدمات (Service-Centric)، الحوسبة السحابية (Cloud Computing) و تقنيات الشبكة الدلالية (Semantic Web) حتى المستوى الثالث و طلبة الماجستير. كما أنه أيضا مدير لبرنامج الدراسات العليا في الحاسبات و التكنولوجيا. بناءا على سجل أبحاثه المضئ في أنظمة متعددة - الوكلاء الذكية (intelligent multi-agent systems) فإن دكتور عثمان قد بدأ في إستكشاف تطويع الشبكات الدلالية في تراكيب ذكية لخدمات الشبكة. حيث  سرعان ما إمتدت و توسعت تطبيقات تقنيات الشبكات الدلالية في أبحاث د. طه عثمان لتشمل أنظمة إسترجاع المعلومات الذكية و إدارة المعرفة، مع إهتمام خاص متعاظم بمعالجة اللغة العربية و تحليل الرأي.
